Green roofs – vegetated roofs or roofs with vegetated spaces – make practical, economic and environmental sense, improving the appearance of a building, helping to restore biodiversity and delivering tangible benefits such as improved insulation, better acoustics and reduced risk of local flooding. They have been adopted extensively in Europe and we are now witnessing a surge of UK interest in them as their contribution to the environment is becoming more widely appreciated.
In constructing the Royal Holloway University’s 4000 square metre green roof we installed plywood decking, insulation, IPS Rubberfuse single ply membrane and sedum greening. Detail to outlets set in a gravel border were a technical issue that we had to take into account.
The project, value £400k, was completed in four months. The principal contractor was Laing O’Rourke. Mineral Star Roofing were the approved contractor
